What’s in a Name?

Objective: Students will create a new title for a work of art.

Materials:

  • Notecard
  • Pencil

Introduce: Coose one or several work(s) of art for students to work from. (Artworks that are Untitled are particularly engaging for this activity.) You may want to conduct a VTS to help get students thinking about the artwork(s).

Ask:

  • What is a different title this artwork could have?
  • Why did you choose this new title?

Activity:

  1. Give students an index card and a pencil.
  1. Have students choose an artwork (either in the classroom or in the galleries).
  1. Instruct students to write their new title for the artwork on their card.
  1. Students should write a short explanation for their title on the back of their card.

Extension: Have students make their own label about the work of art. What information should be included? What order should it be displayed?

National Standards:

  • VA:Re7.2.Ka Describe what an image represents.
