The Similarities and Differences That Unite Us

Objective: Students will compare and contrast two artworks using digital media.

Materials:

Introduce: Take students on a guided tour at the Milwaukee Art Museum. We suggest using the Communities and Traditions tour for this lesson. *Schedule time after your tour for students to self-guide and take photos of the artwork.

Ask:

  •  What are some artworks that inspired you on the tour?
  • How are these artworks similar? Different?

Activity:

  1. Have students experiment with one of two Web 2.0 tools, Animoto or Glogster, to compare two works of art that they saw.
  1. Students should use their knowledge of the tool to comment on cultural similarities, differences, and artistic styles by comparing and contrasting two paintings that are representative of a life cycle event or daily activity.

National Standards:

  • VA:Re7.2.8a Compare and contrast contexts and media in which viewers encounter images that influence ideas, emotions, and actions.
