Objective: Students will explore how cultural values shape the way people experience and interpret events by examining the painting and connecting it to their own cultural experiences.
Look: Give students time to observe the painting. Ask them to notice how the people are interacting, what activities they are doing, and how they express themselves. Encourage them to think about what values might be important to this community based on what they see. Ask questions like, what do you think the people in the painting care about? How are they showing friendship, family, or community? How might their ways of celebrating or expressing feelings be different from your own or other cultures you know?
Write: In a few sentences, describe one value you think is important to the people in this painting and explain how you can tell from the picture. Then, write about a value from your own family or culture and how it shapes the way you celebrate or express emotions.
Share: Have students share their writing in pairs or small groups. Discuss similarities and differences in the values they noticed in the painting and those from their own experiences. Invite a few volunteers to share with the whole class. Discuss how people from different cultures can have different values and ways of interpreting experiences, which affect how they behave and celebrate.
Standard: SS.BH2.b.4 Give examples of how peoples from different cultures develop different values and ways of interpreting experiences.
