Impressionism: Making Marks

Objective: Students will practice mark making from Impressionist artworks and then create their own Impressionist artwork. 

Materials:   

  • Paper 
  • Pencil 
  • Watercolor 
  • Pastel 
  • Chalk 
  • Charcoal 

Introduce: Have students view Impressionist artworks either in the classroom or in the galleries. Look at types of marks the artists made in their artwork. 

Ask:  

  •  What is the motion you think the artist made to make this mark? 
  • What materials do you think the artist used to make this mark? 

Activity:  

  1. Use this Impressionism worksheet (PDF) for students to practice their mark making. 
  1. Have students create their own Impressionist artwork using the medium of their choice. 
  1. Encourage them to use the subject matter of the Impressionists as inspiration.
