Westward Expansion and Art by Cole Allen

Objective: Students will explore the impact that white settlers had on Plains Indian nations and bison. 

Look: Introduce the image to the students and have them look at it for a minute. After a minute, instruct students to turn and talk with their table groups about what they see in this image. Guiding questions: What do you see? How does this make you feel? What is in the foreground? What about the background? 

Write: Using what they know about the Image, have students fill out a “want to know” and “know” graphic organizer. Bring the discussion to the whole class. This painting connects with westward expansion. Have students research through some preselected sources regarding the impact of white settlers on Plains Indians nations and bison populations. 

Share: Students come back together as a group, sharing what they learned, and then 

connecting what they learned to what they see or interpret in the piece.
