Objective: Students will explore the concept of erosion through the art piece, Lone Rock with Canoe, by Henry Hamilton Bennett.
Notice: Look at this photo and find as many things as you can see about the rock formations. What do you notice about the trees, water, or patterns in the photo?
Wonder: What does the environment look like? What causes the rock to look the way it does? What could have this effect on rocks?
Ask: Have you ever seen formations like this before? What do you think caused the rock to form like this? How could the weather affect this?
Share: Turn and talk with others around you. Conduct a full group conversation about the effect erosion and weathering of these rocks.
Standards:
- 4-ESS2-1. Make observations and measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation.
