Objective: Students will identify shapes, patterns, and symmetry within the artwork. Then, they
will create a different geometric shape that uses repeated patterns and symmetrical balance.
Look: Students will observe the beaded banner while being asked questions that encourage
mathematical thinking. What shapes do you see? Do any shapes repeat? Students will make
notes of what they see in their math journals.
Write: Students will use their notes to plan their own piece of artwork that uses shapes, patterns,
and symmetry. Students are encouraged to be creative and use various shapes geometric shapes
in their design.
Create: Students will use materials such as colored paper, blocks, etc. Bring their design to life.
Students’ work will be inspired by the original beaded banner meaning that they must use
multiple shapes, patterns, and symmetry.
Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.G.A.1 – Understand that shapes in different categories
(e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and other quadrilaterals) may share attributes, and that shared
attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals).
