Alpha-List

Objective: This activity can be used as a warm-up for writing a poem or short story to spark inspiration and fuel creativity. 

Materials:   

  • Paper 
  • Writing utensil  
  • Image of an artwork 

Introduce: Introduce students to the piece(s) of artwork. Conduct a Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS) to help students become familiar with the artwork. 

Ask:  

  •  What do you see in this piece of art? (elements & principles of art) 
  • What do you think about this piece of art? 
  • What do you wonder about this piece of art? 

Activity:  

  1. Have students look closely at their artwork.
  2. Have students write a list of the letters of the alphabet. 
  3. Instruct students to write a descriptive word that starts with each letter of the alphabet. (EX: A – Abstract) 
  4. If students are getting stuck, place them in pairs or groups to work collaboratively. 

National Standards:  

  •  VA:Re7.2.Ka Describe what an image represents. 
  • VA:Re8.1.5a Interpret art by analyzing characteristics of form and structure, contextual information, subject matter, visual elements, and use of media to identify ideas and mood conveyed.
